The Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is located in Belmont and it can be combined for a two-day trip to the city, but it also holds enough to earn it a place on the list of its own merit. The garden is 380-acres on the banks of Lake Wylie. It boasts rolling hills, meadows, and woodlands, as well as 110 acres of manicured gardens. When visiting Belmont, you probably won’t even realize you have left Charlotte proper. The city’s slogan is “Where Southern Charm Blossoms,” and we couldn’t agree more. Carrigan Farms is family-owned for five generations and where you can pick in-season fruits and vegetables. There’s also a natural rock quarry swimming hole, which is perfect for cooling off on hot days. You can see Charlotte’s skyline on clear days by following Crowders Trail for 2-1/2 miles to the top of Crowders Mountain. The highest peak is reachable via Pinnacle Trail (2 miles).

It’s North Carolina’s largest man-made lake, with 500 miles of shoreline to explore. First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. We did not get to Phoenix until almost 3 hours after we were originally supposed to.
