What was originally a boxed, compartmentalized 1980s tract home is now airy, light, and connected to its natural surroundings. Sustainable strategies were incorporated to provide healthy living and a net-positive-energy-use home. Onsite geothermal, solar panels, battery storage, insulation systems, and triple-pane windows combine to provide independence from frequent power outages, and supply excess power to the electrical grid. Green roofs, raingardens, and permeable paving contribute to clean water through storm water retention, while also providing habitat for birds, frogs, pollinators, and other wildlife. It will be the second nhow Hotel of NH Hotel Group in Germany and aims to offer an exceptional design concept and the highest quality facilities and service.

On Sunday 14 April, the Large Trading Hall at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange will be transformed into an artistic installation reflecting the theme “Technology and Man”. Home 2 is a converted two-story that is now a four-level masterpiece on the shores of Lake Minnetonka.

To take full advantage of the lakefront on a small site, the home emphasizes horizontal rather than vertical massing and is focused on spaces to play! A bowling alley, a theater lounge, a sauna and outdoor pool, decks, and an outdoor bar allow the owners to make life in this Mound retreat fun year-round. The design team opened the drywall boxes that limited light, leaving only a series of vertical drywall planes and horizontal wood slabs that allow the light and views to pass and the space to flow. A plane of natural wood also slips out the door onto the entry deck and down its stairs as a modest counterpoint and a foreshadowing of the updated interior. The home was originally a 1980s tract home in a developer’s cul-de-sac in suburban Minneapolis. It had most of its windows on the front and back and virtually none in the longer sidewalls; it also used solid half walls and stair rails, which made it light on the ends and dark in the middle.

Think green roofs, geothermal heating, and solar energy are just for large commercial buildings? Home 5 in Tonka Bay incorporates all of these elements into a modest-footprint lakefront home. The house blends into the surrounding landscape and features modern design and elements that will allow the owners to age in place. After the tour, Month of Modern commenced with a special group of invited guests at Fiori Flowers. Compact single-level living with a panoramic lake view was the catalyst for design of this downsized home for empty-nest owners of a residential construction and remodeling company. Primary living spaces align under a continuous vault that draws light from above to track time and seasons.

Integration is the word that best describes all the goals and functions of the new “HW 1.” On a number of levels, our design stands for synergistic and innovative integration, association, and connection. Saturday, September 24th, tour day arrived under sunny skies and a glorious 73-degree forecast. Ticket sales were brisk the entire day and people were excited to see the impressive mix of homes. West Luxe Design Builds Modern Lake Home

The homeowners sought to create a modest, modern, lakeside cottage, nestled into a narrow lakeside lot in Tonka Bay. The site inspired a modified shotgun style floor plan, with rooms laid out in succession from front to back. Careful planning provides both generous views west out to the lake and east toward wetlands across the road. A successful collaboration between architects and tensile designers reached its final stage last week at Frankfurt’s Light + Building festival and trade fair, where MDT-tex launched the final Tensilation Type EV canopy system. Grimshaw has been working with MDT-tex to develop a product that offers both the flexibility that comes with modular canopies and the engineering advantages of a unified structure.

Three houses on the 2018 Homes by Architects Tour demonstrate the latest in sustainable design elements paired with the best of modern design. Key buildings include Museum für Kunsthandwerk by Richard Meier and the Commerzbank Tower by Foster & Partners, Architects . Key recent buildings include Tower 185 Building by Prof. Christoph Mäckler Architekten and the KfW Westarkade building by Sauerbruch Hutton. A LANDMARK OF THE FUTURE award, designed and presented by Todd Reed,was granted to one home on the tour that best exemplifies the criteria considered when determining whether a building is worthy of being a landmark. The 2018 Homes by Architects Tour draws back the curtain on the latest in lakefront design.

Along this same axis, ceiling heights and floor levels vary to introduce drama and intimacy. A ‘City for All’ – this celebrated Dutch atchitecture practice win this architectural competition for the former Deutsche Bank site. The architectural firm AL_A was awarded the title of ‘Architects of the Year’ at this year’s Iconic Awards. The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, completed in 2016, likewise created a sensation. Abundant natural daylight is brought into living spaces through high, clerestory windows that run the length of the home and provide privacy among the tightly spaced neighboring houses. Large sliding doors invite activity to spill out to the deck where steps spill down into the landscape and toward the lakeshore.

Home 12 includes many salvaged materials in the remodel, which is both more sustainable and important to the homeowners, for whom the house had been a childhood home. The house also incorporates many sustainably-produced materials and energy preservation systems to reduce the overall footprint of the property. A remodel focused on using natural materials and bringing in natural light define Home 11 in Bloomington.
